At a real table this is the fastest decision anyone makes all night, and it's never as simple as it sounds. Pick a partner and it's easy enough, if a little performative with an audience watching. Pick a mate and somebody always demands an explanation nobody has ready. Pick the person you've been not-so-subtly eyeing up and the room goes quiet in that specific way rooms do right before they erupt. Whoever gets chosen has a say too — they can wave it off, and the shot covers both of you.

The decent move is checking in before diving in, not after. A quick "you alright with this?" beats an awkward pause in front of six people, and it's the difference between a laugh and someone covering their neck for a week. If there's any hesitation at all, the shot is sitting right there — take it.
